Recently, the President Elect in the United State of America; in the person of Mr. Barack Obama nominated his formal rival at the last presidential primary race for the Democrats and also an ex-first lady Mrs Hillary Clinton for the post of the “Secretary of State”.
This to me is a surprise, a very big surprise but when you look at the rationale behind his decision, which I quote now “Mrs Clinton is an American of tremendous stature who will have my complete confidence, who knows many of the world leaders, who will command respect in every capital and who will clearly have the ability to advance our interest around the world; Hillary’s appointment is a sign to friend and foe of the seriousness of my commitment to renew American diplomacy and restore our alliances”.
This is a big step taken by Obama, despite the clashes that occurred between them during the primaries and the differences of opinions to national issues; he still went ahead to nominate her for the post. This goes to show that in the affairs of the State, the greater good of the state is more important than your individual goal or opinion. Secondly, working hand-in-hand with your rivals from within or outside your party will foster the unity of the State in general especially when the candidate nominated has a well established credibility and well-withal to perform the duty in hand.
Conclusively, this is a big lesson for the administration of our current president to learn from because what I have been seeing and hearing will not foster the unity of Nigeria. For instance, appointment of minister, advisers and aids from only his party (PDP) and the appointees consisting of largely Hausa’s will not help matters; it will only show him as a biased leader. He should endeavor to appoint people like Dr. (Mrs) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the minister due to her diligent work and for the fact that she is well known by world leaders; in fact, most of the people that served under the immediate past administration Chief Olusegun Obasanjo are very good.
